Christopher R.H. Newton, MD, FACEP, earned his medical degree at the University of Edinburgh Medical School in Scotland, U.K. He completed a Family Practice Residency in Edinburgh, Scotland before travelling to the U.S. for his Emergency Medicine Residency training at the University of Michigan/St. Joseph Mercy Health System. Serving as Chief Resident his final year, Dr. Newton graduated in June 2002. Dr. Newton is board certified in Emergency Medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine. He has held a number of administrative positions at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital-Ann Arbor, including Director of the Emergency Observation Unit, Assistant Medical Director and still holds a Core Faculty position for the Emergency Medicine Residency Program at University of Michigan/St Joseph Mercy Hospital. His most recent role was as Regional Vice-President for Mercy Hospital-Grayling; Gratiot Medical Center, Alma; Chelsea Community Hospital and Lakeland Regional Medical Center. Dr. Newton is an accomplished writer, having published an emergency medicine handbook in 2006 and many book chapters, abstracts, and articles. He became a member of the Emergency Physicians Medical Group, PC Board of Directors in September 2008, and he is now President and CEO of Emergency Physicians Medical Group, PC.
Rodney W. Smith, MD, FACEP

Dr. Smith graduated from medical school in his home town at the University of Louisville in 1977. He did residency training at University of Michigan and SUNY-Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, NY. He started as an emergency physician in 1981 in Syracuse, and he has worked in emergency departments in Valparaiso and Indianapolis, Indiana before coming to EPMG in 1994 when he joined the staff at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor. At St. Joe's he is a member of the faculty of the University of Michigan Emergency Medicine residency, served as Research Director specializing in acute stroke treatment, led the implementation of the Emergency Department electronic medical record system, and served on a variety of committees in the Emergency Department as well as the hospital and medical staff.
Dr. Smith joined the EPMG management team as Compliance Officer and Billing and Reimbursement Administrator in 2004. He has served on the Board of Directors since 2005 as Treasurer and CFO (2006), Secretary & Treasurer (2009). In his role as the Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Smith serves as the medical policy decision maker. In addition to his work for EPMG, he also serves on the Board of Directors for Huron Valley Physicians Association, the Healthcare Finance Committee of the Michigan College of Emergency Physicians, and the Liaison Committee for Third-Party Payers of the Michigan State Medical Society.
Kenneth L. Adams
Chief Operating Officer
Ken Adams received his BA Degree with distinction in Psychology from the University of Michigan in 1986. His Masters Degree in Social Work and Graduate Certificate in Labor and Industrial Relations were also earned at the University of Michigan in 1989. Ken began working with Emergency Physicians Medical Group, PC in 1990 as a Recruiter and Network Administrator. He advanced to Director of Physician Resources in 1993 and then to Chief Operating Officer in 1998. In 2002 Ken was appointed as EPMG's Privacy Official to oversee EPMG's corporate responsibilities required by HIPAA. Ken was elected in 2009 as a member of EPMG's Board of Directors. He was also elected in 2009 to the Board of Directors of the Washtenaw County Chapter of the American Red Cross and serves as Chairman of the Chapter's Human Resources Committee. Ken is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
Michael F. Gillen, CPA

Michael Gillen joined EPMG, P.C. in early March, 2010. Prior to EPMG Michael was CFO of Medcor, Inc., a $55 million medical services provider. Michael came to Medcor from The Sayers Group, LLC, a $300 million technical services provider and reseller of computer hardware and supplies, where he served as Corporate Controller. Prior to Sayers, Michael was with Arthur Andersen, assigned to IGA, Inc., an $75 million dollar grocery cooperative serving the IGA grocery chain, where he served as Corporate Controller. Prior to IGA, Michael served as Assistant Corporate Controller at Topco Associates, Inc., a $3 billion grocery cooperative serving major domestic grocery chains and one of Chicago's largest privately owned companies. Before Topco, Michael was a Manager with Arthur Andersen for five years in their commercial audit division.
Michael earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Accountancy from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign College of Business, and is a Certified Public Accountant.
Michael G. Mikhail, MD, FACEP

Dr. Mikhail earned his BA at Johns Hopkins University in 1983. He earned his MD at the University of Michigan Medical School (1987). He is Chairman of the Saint Joseph Mercy Hospital Department of Emergency Medicine and a clinical instructor for the University of Michigan's Medical School. He has received the U-M's Golden Apple Award for outstanding contribution to resident education. Dr. Mikhail was a founding member of the Society for Chest Pain Centers and Providers. He serves on ACEP's EM Practice Committee and is also a member of ACEP's Emergency Observation Section and served as a past Chair. Dr. Mikhail currently serves as Regional Vice President for the St Joseph Mercy Health System in SE Michigan. He is also President of Midwest Medflight air-medical transport. Dr. Mikhail also serves as EPMG's Chairman of the Board.
William J. Angelos, MD, FACEP

Dr. Angelos earned his Bachelor of Arts in Biology from McDaniel College (formerly Western Maryland College) in Westminster, Maryland (1980), and then attended medical school at Albany Medical College in Albany, New York. He is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) and a member of the Ohio Chapter of ACEP, and is board certified in emergency medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine. He has been Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth, Ohio since 1997. He is currently Regional Vice President for Southern Ohio Medical Center, in Portsmouth, Ohio, Wheeling Hospital in Wheeling, West Virginia, and Brown County Hospital in Georgetown, Ohio. He became a member of the Board of Directors of EPMG in September of 2008.
Robert H. McCurren, IV, MD, FACEP

Dr. McCurren earned his Bachelor degree from Notre Dame (Cum Laude) and continued on to complete his medical degree at Baylor College of Medicine in 1997. Dr. McCurren traveled to Ann Arbor, Michigan for his four-year Emergency Medicine Residency at the University of Michigan/St. Joseph Mercy Hospital graduating in June 2001 as Chief Resident. He began his career with EPMG in a Core Teaching Faculty position at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital-Ann Arbor while also working at St. Joseph Mercy Saline and Livingston Hospitals. In 2005 Dr. McCurren was appointed Chairman and Medical Director, Division of Emergency Medicine for Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital, Wyandotte, Michigan a position he holds currently. Dr. McCurren is currently the Regional Vice President for Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital's Emergency Department, Urgent Care, Pediatric Emergency Center, Hospitalist Program, and the freestanding Center for Health Services location. He is also Regional Vice President for St. Joseph Health System in Tawas, Michigan. Board certified through the American Board of Emergency Medicine, Dr. McCurren has served on countless committees including Chair of the Difficult Airway Committee. Dr. McCurren was awarded the 2008 Callahan Award, the highest award a physician can receive. Dr. McCurren just achieved independent department status for Emergency Medicine at Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital. He became a member of the EPMG Board of Directors in September 2008.
John P. Mulligan, MD, MBA, FACEP

Dr. Mulligan received his BS from Loyola University Chicago and his medical degree from Loyola Stritch School of Medicine. He completed his residency in emergency medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Dr. Mulligan also served 8 years in the US Army as a medical officer. He holds medical licenses in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Virginia, and Delaware. Dr. Mulligan is an instructor for ACLS and PALS, and is an active member of the ICEP EMS committee. Dr. Mulligan is board certified as a Diplomat of the American Board of Emergency Medicine and is a Fellow in the American College of Emergency Physicians. Dr. Mulligan received his executive MBA from Northwestern Kellogg School of Business.
Dr. Mulligan was appointed to the EPMG Board of Directors in 2008 and has served as company Treasurer since 2010. In addition to his leadership role at EPMG, Dr. Mulligan holds a faculty appointment as Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at Loyola University Medical Center.
Wayne B. Wheeler, MD

Dr. Wheeler has been employed with EPMG as an emergency physician for over 14 years. He is currently working for us at three of our Ohio facilities: Southern Ohio Medical Center, Portsmouth Urgent Care, and Wheelersburg Urgent Care. In addition, Dr. Wheeler was recently announced as the 2010-2012 EPMG provider elected board member. He comes to EPMG with a plethora of education from the University of Illinois including an undergraduate degree in Mathematics, an MBA from the College of Commerce, a Medical Degree from the College of Medicine, and a Juris Doctor from the College of Law. Dr. Wheeler has been working as an emergency physician for more than 27 years.
Bryan Staffin, DO, FACOEP-D

Dr. Staffin earned his BS from University of Notre Dame in 1983. He completed his Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine at Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine (1987) as well as his EM Residency (1990), and is currently a Clinical Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine there. He is board certified in emergency medicine (1991) and has served on the board of directors for ACOEP and AOBEM (secretary). Dr. Staffin is currently serving as the Regional Vice President for Lakeland Hospitals in St. Joseph and Niles, Michigan, Community Health Center of Branch County in Coldwater, Michigan, and Gratiot Community Hospital in Alma, Michigan and as the Medical Director for Berrien County, Michigan, EMS.
David A. Butz, PhD

David Butz received his PhD in Economics in 1986 from Northwestern University. He served on the faculty of the Economics Department at the University of California at Los Angeles from 1987-1994, the University of Michigan Business School faculty from 1994-2002, and the University of Michigan Medical School from 2002 - 2005. At the Business School, he has taught core Applied Microeconomics and Operations Management to 1st-year MBAs, and 2nd-year MBA electives on supply chains and health care. He has won many teaching awards at Northwestern, UCLA, and Michigan. He has participated in a variety of executive education programs and distance learning projects. He was a co-founder of the consultancy MDContent and recently started up DABAnalytics.
His other research expertise lies in industrial organization, law & economics, antitrust, and supply chain contracting, where he has published numerous peer-reviewed articles.
Jeffrey W. Callard, PA-C

Jeffrey W. Callard, PA-C is a Certified Physician Assistant with over 20 years of service to EPMG. He holds the title of Lead Administrative MLP at his current primary site in Ann Arbor, Michigan at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Emergency Center. His other sites include Chelsea Community Hospital, SJM Livingston Hospital in Howell, Michigan, SJM Brighton Health Center, and Saint Mary Mercy Hospital in Livonia, Michigan. He has worked clinically for over 23 years. Jeff Graduated from Alma College, Alma, Michigan in 1986 and completed the Western Michigan University Physician Assistant Program in 1988. Jeff is a founding member, past President, and current Secretary/Treasurer of the Society of Emergency Medicine Physician Assistants. He is also on the Federal and Governmental Affairs Committee and the Medical-Legal Committee for American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP). He was Liaison to ACEP from the American Academy of Physician Assistants for seven years.
